Whenever I am packing for a trip, my first thought is to what shoes will I bring?. What is going to be comfortable, stylish and versatile enough to be worn with all of my clothes? Shoes come first, then the clothes.

  • Start with the shoe color: Neutrals and metallics are the most versatile. Black, brown or pewter/bronze are the most versatile. These colors will go with nearly any color palette you select for your clothes.
  • ‘Comfort’ shoes do not have to look like your grandma’s black lace-ups. There are many chic styles that feel heavenly on your feet.
  • Find styles that will go with multiple outfits.  For example, ballet flats will go with both dresses, shorts, jeans, and dressy outfits.  Ankle boots are good with pants or dresses (look for a boot that fits snuggly around the ankle) and ‘athleisure’ sneakers can go with almost anything. Sneakers are a godsend to all travelers.
  • Closed toe and heel work the best for walking on cobblestones and uneven surfaces.
  • Never compromise on fit. If your heel slips when trying on, it will be worse later. Yes, shoes give, but never in the places we want.
  • If you are traveling in warm weather sandals that are mostly closed are the safest for your feet.
  • Check the weather report- (I always expect rain at least sometime in the trip). Weather proof your shoes with sprays or consider rubber shoes. You don’t want your footwear to be a soggy mess.
  • Find shoes that you can wear hours of time standing and walking way more that you do at home.
  • Do not bring a new pair of shoes that you haven’t worn at least 20 hours.
  • Select shoes with rubber soles for the most comfort.
  • My happy place is with a shoe that has some heel. Avoid selecting a heel height that you don’t usually wear. Even though ballet flats are thought to be comfortable for most- they give me a back ache.
  • Go for lightweight designs: The last thing you want is to weigh your suitcase down.  There are plenty of shoe options out there that are light and flexible. (Always remember, no matter how well your trip is organized, you will end up carrying your suitcase up a flight(s) of stairs.
  • No more than four pairs. My ‘gold standard’ is three.
  • Wear your heaviest and most bulky on the flight.
  • My favorite designers: Gabor hands down- then Mephisto, Camper, Arche, Ecco, Clarkes, Keen, Naot, Beautifeel, Rothys, Merrill, Nike. There are many more- what is your favorite?
